King of the Cut-Off For 40 years I have roamed the infamous Magnolia Cut-Off area. At one time I had ties with a lot of folks that lived in the area. I lived nearby for many years hunting, fishing, camping and railfanning, so we decided to take a ride through the beautiful back country that is the Magnolia Cut-Off area. Shout out to my long time friend Peter Furnee. We had a lot of railroad cam...

    I just sifted it thru a really fine woven screen then sifted it again with a screen that took the bigger stuff out. Works good and no blender.

    I tried to paint my track with just acrylics hated it. I've been considering airbrushing... but this looks great. I have got chalk which I have used previously but never thought about this... 😊

    Is the right of way still owned by the RR? I would not want to hike this and risk trespassing if any of the RoW had reverted to the surrounding landowners. Also check out the ex-WM between Hendricks and Thomas, which is now a bike trail. You can ride it both ways or just go downhill and get a shuttle back up.

    Those rollers are genious! I'll be honest, I've been in HO almost 30 years and only recently realized the wheels could be moved along the axle. (Had a bunch of mystery derailments with one car and found it was out of gauge.)

    Amazing that the best track weathering technique is from a 10-year old video. I've watched dozens of track-weathering YT videos and liked this one best. I tested it on my Atlas o-scale layout and the results were absolutely stellar. I did make some minor changes to the technique though. Firstly, I prefer Pan Pastels in lieu of chalk as they're ready to use, not that expensive and go a long way. I also used Krylon Camouflage brown to initially spray the track instead of black. Spraying the track with an oil-based primer is critical because the chalk needs something to "bite", and this Krylon is one of the best primers you can get. I also found there was no need to mix the alcohol slurry rust chalks -- I just dusted the rails and tie plates directly using a mix of oxide read, burnt umber and black -- which sticks just as well as the alcohol slurry painted on. Anyway, it's a bit of work but the results are worth in and better than anything else I've seen. Thanks Joey!

    A little late to the game here, but is that access road open to the public or is it private property? And is it traversable by full-size vehicles (Jeeps, etc.)?

    • @tracksidescenery
      @tracksidescenery 4 місяці тому

      The access road is open and used primarily by the river lot land owners and of course railfans. All property on either side of the road is privately owned and some still by CSX. After rains, there is a lot of standing water. 4x4 or higher clearance vehicles are fine. Back in the 90's we used to run through there with a big Chevy Impala scraping the ballast a bit.

    • @tracksidescenery
      @tracksidescenery 4 місяці тому

      I never seal it as I don't handle the cars much, when I do handle them, I usually picking up from underneath to avoid fingerprints. But I would imagine you could seal it with something like Krylon Matte Clear.
