King of the Cut-Off

King of the Cut-Off For 40 years I have roamed the infamous Magnolia Cut-Off area. At one time I had ties with a lot of folks that lived in the area. I lived nearby for many years hunting, fishing, camping and railfanning, so we decided to take a ride through the beautiful back country that is the Magnolia Cut-Off area. Shout out to my long time friend Peter Furnee. We had a lot of railroad cam...

Looks like mullen is the plant
Excellent as always'...
Joey, just found this. What scale is this layout? Nice work on that huge mountain! I really like the rock structures'...👍👍🌟🌟
Really nice layout with atmosphere and character in not so much space. Congrats.
You should go out west where there are real mountains when it snows and come back down it’s warm.
Where can we buy it
I just sifted it thru a really fine woven screen then sifted it again with a screen that took the bigger stuff out. Works good and no blender.
wonderful to watch the evolution of your shelf !
I will try right away your technic, to support an atlas HO bridge
This is spectacular!
I tried to paint my track with just acrylics hated it. I've been considering airbrushing... but this looks great. I have got chalk which I have used previously but never thought about this... 😊
Is the right of way still owned by the RR? I would not want to hike this and risk trespassing if any of the RoW had reverted to the surrounding landowners. Also check out the ex-WM between Hendricks and Thomas, which is now a bike trail. You can ride it both ways or just go downhill and get a shuttle back up.
Those rollers are genious! I'll be honest, I've been in HO almost 30 years and only recently realized the wheels could be moved along the axle. (Had a bunch of mystery derailments with one car and found it was out of gauge.)
"It's realistic!!!" Where's the plaster?
That backdrop looks 3D on video!
thank, you for youre great helpful video]👍
[thank, you for youre great helpful video]👍
the route needs reviving
Great hike and vid; any chance of this trackage seeing trains ever again ?
Enjoying the vids. Thought i would try the real dirt idea. How do you get the dirt smell out?
Thank you! If you use the hairspray, that is what you will smell for a while.
Sure looks great!
Amazing that the best track weathering technique is from a 10-year old video. I've watched dozens of track-weathering YT videos and liked this one best. I tested it on my Atlas o-scale layout and the results were absolutely stellar. I did make some minor changes to the technique though. Firstly, I prefer Pan Pastels in lieu of chalk as they're ready to use, not that expensive and go a long way. I also used Krylon Camouflage brown to initially spray the track instead of black. Spraying the track with an oil-based primer is critical because the chalk needs something to "bite", and this Krylon is one of the best primers you can get. I also found there was no need to mix the alcohol slurry rust chalks -- I just dusted the rails and tie plates directly using a mix of oxide read, burnt umber and black -- which sticks just as well as the alcohol slurry painted on. Anyway, it's a bit of work but the results are worth in and better than anything else I've seen. Thanks Joey!
[thank, you for youre great video]👍
Is the 6 x 6 inch square 1 inch in thickness or 2 inches?
2" thick approx. Cut down from a large 4x8' sheet
Awesome tutorial! I appreciated the bits of humor as well. I’m definitely going to be using this technique on my 1:32 scale slot car track!
Thank you so much for the info 🎉 that was really helpful 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
Great little railroad with a really big look!
Very Very great idea and demonstrations
Very good work, but the music was killing me
Very Informative and Helpful !!!
Excellent job of demonstrating your technique...results are great..lastly love the Video crossing Yellow Breeches in Boiling Springs on the Lurgan..
Very cool!
Super!!!
Wow the scenery in the intro looks just like the real world 😮😮😮
Many thanks for the well founded explanations --Masterful !!
You make this look easy, which means it's not easy. LOL
Good tips. As an alterative to hair spray you can drench the dirt with dilute PVA glue to seal it and lock it in. Happy Modelling
Fantastic work!! It needs to be longer and be the entire rail line…..
A little late to the game here, but is that access road open to the public or is it private property? And is it traversable by full-size vehicles (Jeeps, etc.)?
The access road is open and used primarily by the river lot land owners and of course railfans. All property on either side of the road is privately owned and some still by CSX. After rains, there is a lot of standing water. 4x4 or higher clearance vehicles are fine. Back in the 90's we used to run through there with a big Chevy Impala scraping the ballast a bit.
If you were going to steal it, would you use a matte spray varnish? Or......?
I never seal it as I don't handle the cars much, when I do handle them, I usually picking up from underneath to avoid fingerprints. But I would imagine you could seal it with something like Krylon Matte Clear.
Lol...thank you for explaining EVERYTHING...I watch so many videos that basically boil down to still shots of their amazing work with no explanation! And your bits of comedy made learning fun! Thanks
Absolutely mind-blowing, thanks for sharing! And hat's off to the people who put the commitment into saving this site for posterity.
I wish they could fix up that line and run passenger excursions but that would cost a boat load of money. I just hate that theirs not much left of the Western Maryland Railway lines
Brilliant. Joey, you are a godsend for the budget-minded modeler!
THANKS FOR SHOWING YOUR SKILLS
